"GRIST was always a ritual project, a project that combines randomisation, synchromysticality, and ego-death. When it first started in 2009, it was one of my top three most-performed projects (I always have many projects at any one time).
By 2021, I barely perform as GRIST at all – in fact, the project has reduced in activity so much that, if it weren’t for the annual release by Sombre Soniks, GRIST might not perform at all. So these annual offerings are not just albums, but, in a very real sense, they are what keeps GRIST alive – they have become once-a-year celebrations that not only honour the project but have actually turned the project from a band-as-ritual to a ritual-as-band.
These albums are no longer just a compilation of rituals released as music, but music performed as annual ritual, cyclical events to be re-performed every year, in much the same way as a mainstream person re-performs Xmas or New Years Eve. Once, GRIST was a ritualistic tool with the purpose of creating sounds – now, GRIST is an annual ceremony in itself, a ceremony which results in sound.
Thank you P23 and Sombre Soniks, for keeping GRIST alive, for creating a sacred space for ritual Gristian re-performance, for celebrating and honouring what has become a seasonal magick tied to the immense orbit of a single planet around a solitary sun.
‘Another Year’ is dedicated to P23."
"This is a dark and evocative soundtrack, with the three tracks working together to produce a mesmerizing listening experience that is somehow both disturbing and soothing in equal measure. Wonderful!" - This Is Darkness
